Two Day Itinerary
Day One – City of New Iberia
9:00 – 10:00 Konriko Rice Mill and Company Store and Rosary House
Tour the oldest operating rice mill in the United States and browse through the company store for a vast assortment of local products. When done, cross St. Peter (HWY 182) and shop the Rosary House for religious specialty items.
10:00 – 12:00 Walking Tour of East Main Street Historic District
"New Iberia has the most beautiful Main Street in the country" - Author James Lee Burke.
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The three-quarter-mile-long district more or less follows the course of Bayou Teche as it meanders downstream from the center of town. There are 71 buildings within the district that date between c. 1890 and c. 1930. Click here for an online, condensed version of the walking tour.
12:00 – 1:00 Lunch
Enjoy lunch at one of New Iberia’s many downtown restaurants, which range from fine Cajun and Creole dining to quaint sandwich shops. There is something to please everyone’s taste.
1:00 – 2:00 Shadows-On-The-Teche
Tour Louisiana’s only National Trust Historic House Museum and Gardens. The 1834 manor house was built by wealthy sugarcane planter David Weeks.
2:00 – 4:00 Optional Afternoon Touring:
Schexnayder Galerie, Olivier Plantation Store, Statue of Hadrian, Episcopal Church of the Epiphany, First United Methodist Church, Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes, Rosary House, Antique and Craft Shopping, Antique Roseville, Stokes Tropical Tour, St. Martinville Area Tour, City park, West End Park
Overnight accommodations available with several local Bed & Breakfasts, Best Western, Comfort Suites, Holiday Inn or The Inn of Iberia. Camping accommodations are available at nearby Lake Fausse Pointe State Park.
Day Two – Surrounding Area
9:00 – 10:00 Tabasco® Visitor Center
Tour the world famous Tabasco® Factory, view video on history of the pepper sauce, browse through company store for McIlhenny Co. products and sample food products.
10:00 – 11:30 Jungle Gardens
Drive or walk through the gardens enjoying bird City, the Buddha Temple and many varieties of bamboo, azalea an camellia plants.
(Note: If time is limited, garden tour can be done in one hour.)
11:30 – 12:30 Lunch
Enjoy a picnic lunch under the oaks in Jungle Gardens or try one of Iberia Parish’s many fine restaurants.
Jeanerette via Hwy 182 East (St. Peter Street)
1:00 – 2:30 Jeanerette Museum
View the pictorial history on the 200 year old sugar cane industry. Observe over 50 mounted species of animal life in the "Swamp Room". An excellent "granite kitchen" collection can be viewed along with 100 year old Cypress Wood Patterns found in the Cypress Room.
Lejeune’s Bakery
Tour the oldest bakery in the area, established in 1884. Enjoy hot french bread.
Loreauville via Hwy 182 West to Right on Hwy 83 to Right on Hwy 86. Right on Blackline Lane to Marshfield Road.
3:30 – 4:30 Airboat Tours, Inc.
Experience the beauty of the vegetation and wildlife of Lake Fausse Pointe. Take a one hour swamp tour in the shallow water swamps, bayous, sloughs and coves of the lake which is adjacent to one of the last major bottom land swamp areas in the country today, the Atchafalaya Basin.
