Irish, Appalachian & Cajun Music featuring Dirk Powell, Seamus Egan, John Doyle and Eric Merrill
This concert explores primarily Irish and Appalachian traditions at the highest musical level with a Cajun tune or two thrown in for flavor. Seamus Egan, Eric Merrill, John Doyle and Dirk Powell are some of the most powerful forces in Irish, Appalachian, and Cajun musical traditions in America today. Dirk Powell is well known to Louisiana audiences for his work with Balfa Toujours, but his own heritage lies in the mountains of Appalachia. His experience with Celtic Music goes back twenty years, to the 1980s, when he and Seamus Egan recorded and performed together as teenagers. Seamus has been a recognized talent since his early youth, having won the All Ireland Senior competitions on four instruments before his 15th birthday, but it is as a founder and leader of the Irish group Solas that he has received his widest international acclaim. One of Seamus' partners in founding Solas was John Doyle, whose driving rhtymic guitar style has been fundamental in the evolution of Celtic music over the last 15 years. John has played with countless artists since leaving Solas, most recently with another All Ireland champ, Liz Carroll. Eric Merrill is a true musician’s musician, who plays multiple instruments in multiple styles without ever losing the core emotional expression that define him as an artist.
