Emergency Preparedness
If an evacuation has been ordered:
Note: In addition to the items listed below, please see our page of suggested supplies to have available.
- Leave early; try to leave in daylight hours
- Tell a friend or family member of your destination plans. Designate one person who is not in the hurricane area as everyones contact member, in the event that you become separated from other family members.
- Turn off your electricity by turning off the main switch in the breaker box.
- Turn off your gas at each appliance, not at the meter. There should be a valve at each appliance. In many homes this valve will be within six feet of the appliance and have a red handle.
- Lock the doors and windows of your home before leaving.
- Tune your car radio to a news station KANE AM1240 or KXKC FM99.1 to hear updates on evacuation routes and shelter locations available. Be sure to follow recommended evacuation routes.
After a hurricane passes:
- Listen to media before returning to the area
- Upon returning to your home, check for damage before turning utilities back on; have necessary repairs made before restoring utilities.
