New residents must buy a Louisiana driver’s license and register their vehicles 30 days after establishing residency in the state.
Holders of valid out-of-state driver’s licenses are not required to take the driving test. However, they must take the visual and other tests.
The bureaus will accept only cash, money order or cashier’s check for the driver’s license, which costs $24.50.
For a Louisiana driver’s license bring your current driver’s license, two forms of identification that show proof of residence and your Social Security card as well as proof of auto insurance.

A license plate costs $20 for two years on automobiles up to $10,000 in value. If you have an automobile valued at more than $10,000, call for exact fee. A license plate costs $40 for four years on trucks of any value.
Bring with you proof of liability insurance and the title or the lien holder information. If you have paid sales tax on the vehicle(s), bring with you proof of this payment. All transactions for vehicle registration can be paid by cash or check.
