Asbestos Removal Guidelines If you are planning a construction project within The City of New Iberia that involves the removal of asbestos from a structure, contact the New Iberia Inspection Department to learn all the required and recommended steps for asbestos removal within the City. Asbestos is a mineral group that occurs naturally as a mass of fibers which can be separated into thin threads and woven. Because these fibers cannot be affected by heat or chemicals, and they do not conduct electricity, they are useful in many industries; however, the fiber masses have a tendency to break easily into a dust that can float in the air, stick to clothes and can easily be inhaled and swallowed, increasing the risk of asbestosis, mesothelioma and cancer of the lungs, larynx and esophagus.
Because of these properties, state regulation requires that emission permits be obtained for asbestos removal projects, asbestos abatement workers and supervisors be state-certified and that proper work practices must be followed. The State Department of Environmental Quality must be contacted one week prior to beginning any removal work. The cost of an asbestos removal permit is a base fee of $5.00 per $1000 valuation plus additional costs dependent on the nature of the work.
