Elevator Permits & Inspections

An elevator permit is required to construct and install elevators or other similar structures within the City of New Iberia. Once a complete set of plans for the construction is approved by the New Iberia Inspection Department, an elevator permit will be issued. The department will also inform you of additional permits, such as electrical and mechanical permits, that will be required. The cost of the permit is a base amount of $5.00 per $1000 valuation, if installed within an existing building, plus additional costs depending on the nature of the project. If an elevator is installed in a new construction at the time of construction, the elevator is included in the square footage cost of the permit.

Following construction, but before use, all elevators must be inspected for safety by a building and fire inspector. When requesting an inspection, please give relevant permit numbers, the time and date you would like the inspection, where the inspection will occur, the name of the customer and the name of the contractor. Allow a minimum of sight (8) business hours from the time of your request for a building inspector to inspect your site. After the inspection has been completed, a sticker will be left in a visible location on the elevator, in the event no one is present on the job site. This sticker will indicate the date of inspection and whether or not the elevator passed. Periodic inspections are required following this initial review.

For more information about elevator permits and fees or to request an inspection contact the Inspection Department located at 457 E. Main Street, Room 412, from 7:00 am to 3:30 pm, Monday through Friday, or call the department at (337) 369-2354.
