Sidewalk Maintenance

The New Iberia Public Works Department constructs, maintains, and repairs sidewalks, curbs, and gutters along city streets. Once installed, these right-of-ways become the joint responsibility of the city and the property owner on whose property the sidewalk crosses. Property owners are responsible for regular maintenance of sidewalks, curbs, and gutters, such as sweeping and removal of debris and trash. The Public Works Department handles cracks and hole repairs of sidewalks as needed or at the request of citizens.

Should a new sidewalk, curb, or gutter be necessary due to normal wear or city need, the department will make the change free of charge. Should a new sidewalk be necessitated because of a property owner's need or negligence, the property owner is responsible for making the change.
