Mayor Hilda Daigre Curry's After-School Mentoring Program The Mayor's After School and Mentoring Program was started in 2005. Our mission is to aid the youth of the community by mentoring in academics, recreation, social skills and personal growth. The program begins the week after public school starts. The time is from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm, Monday through Thursday. We follow the Iberia Parish School System's Calendar. There are some adjustments of time and location due to our facility calendar. We provide snacks daily; twice a week we provide a hot meal for the students. We target grade levels 1 through 12. The cost for the program is $30 per month per child. The program is broken into four segments: 2. Tutoring is provided when a student needs extra help in specific subjects. Although we may contact parents when we see tutoring is needed, parents are encouraged to speak to the Director if they are aware of the need beforehand. We also provide LEAP, ILEAP and IOWA preparation. 3. Recreation is encouraged to keep the body in line with the mind. Students will be involved in organized recreation activities daily. 4. Mentoring is to introduce students to everyday situations in life. They will be involved in group and/or individual mentoring workshops. This allows the student to identify conflict resolutions, behavior management, and set positive individual social guidelines.
Students who achieve honor roll and make improvements each grading period earn the privilege of attending a City Council meeting at City Hall. They are honored by the Mayor, City Council members, family and friends, by receiving an award from the Mayor. These meetings are aired on television. What a treat for the students to share with their families! A FINAL NOTE TO ALL PARENTS: We truly care that your children succeed in school and in life, which is why we provide this program. We want to encourage you to show your children that you WILL make the time to spend with them in a time of learning. YOU are the first teachers in your children's life. We are here to help you help your children.
